What makes a successful small business blog?

A blog with a purpose

If you wish to make your small business blog successful you should first establish its purpose. Is it something you wish to use in order to keep your customers in the loop with your latest company news? It is something you would like to use as a tool to showcase your knowledge and therefore increase the trust in your business? What would you like your readers to do after reading one of your blog posts?
Asking yourself simple questions like the ones above will ensure start off on the right foot and avoid the struggle of creating a blog without knowing what you are going to write about.

Regular updates

There is little point in launching a blog for your small business if you will hardly get the chance to write new posts and keep the content fresh. The easiest way to make blogging an integral part of your routine is to set some time aside each week which you will dedicate to generating new content ideas and writing new articles. Set yourself a target in terms of how many posts you wish to publish each week and try to stick to it as much as possible. If one week you find yourself with more time to blog, bear in mind that most blogging platforms such as WordPress allow you to write and schedule a blog post to be published at a later date.

Interesting and compelling content

In order to come up with great ideas for your small business blog you need to put yourself in your customers shoes and think of article topics which they will find useful. This takes us back to the point about purpose made above – as well as setting a specific goal for your blog, you should write every blog post with a specific purpose in mind. Avoid the very common mistake of simply promoting your services or products and give your customers an insight on the daily running of your business, provide free advice or simply publish a write up of one of the latest events your business took part in.

Visually pleasing

As well as interesting and useful articles, the popularity of your small business blog will very much depend on how great it looks. As well as keeping your blog in line with the branding of the rest of your website, other visual elements such as great images and video content can help you grab your readers’ attention and show that you care about your online image as much as you care about all the other elements of your business.

The right promotion

Finally, just a few words on how the right promotion will help you gain more readers and increase the online exposure of your business. Social media networks such as Twitter and Facebook are a great starting point. Tell all your followers and fans whenever you publish a new blog post and invite them to leave a comment to start a conversation.
On top of that, add useful comments to other related blogs, join online communities, participate in conversations related to your industry and refer to your blog whenever possible.
